Hari ini (29 April 2010) Canonical Ltd., perusahaan sponsor komersial di balik pengembangan dan distribusi sistem operasi GNU/Linux Ubuntu, secara resmi merilis versi final terbaru OS ini yaitu Ubuntu 10.04 LTS yang bernama kode Lucid Linx.

Rilis yang diberi embel-embel LTS (Long Time Support) ini adalah rilis 2 tahunan terbaru dengan dukungan atau update support jangka panjang (sampai dengan 3 tahun untuk desktop dan 5 tahun untuk server), berbeda dengan rilis biasa setiap 6 bulanan.

Fitur, Pengembangan, dan Update Baru di Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Hal pertama yang terasa pada Ubuntu 10.04 adalah kecepatannya dalam proses booting, bisa di bawah 10 detik.

Dari segi tampilan, rilis ini terlihat lebih fresh dan shiny, dengan dafault wallpaper baru keungu-unguan (tidak lagi didominasi warna coklat-orange). Theme yang digunakan lebih elegan, walau pun terlihat seperti meniru Mac OS terutama pada penempatan tombol menu window di sebelah kiri). Tapi tentunya tampilan ini bisa kita ganti dengan mudah, tergantung selera masing-masing.

Aplikasi baru yang cukup menarik adalah Gwibber Social Client, software jejaring sosial, lumayan buat update status ke Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Digg, dll, sesuai dengan moto barunya “Social from the start”.

Ada beberapa aplikasi standar di versi sebelumnya yang sayangnya tidak lagi dipasang di Lucid Lynx, misalnya GIMP image editor. Tapi tenang saja, aplikasi ini atau aplikasi lainnya bisa dengan mudah kita tambahkan dengan cara install menggunakan Software Center.

An easy way to find new software, and keep track of it once it’s installed in a new, sleeker interface. Users can also single out software provided by Ubuntu, by Canonical partners or by developers who use Canonical’s Launchpad Personal Package Archive (PPA) hosting service.

Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx)

This directory contains the most frequently downloaded Ubuntu images. Other images, including DVDs and source CDs, may be available on the cdimage server. See also the list of download mirrors.

Select an image

Ubuntu is distributed on four types of images described below.

Desktop CD

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 256MiB of RAM to install from this CD.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) desktop CD: For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD: Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

Server install CD

The server install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer for use as a server. It will not install a graphical user interface.

There are two images available, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) server install CD: For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
64-bit PC (AMD64) server install CD: Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

Alternate install CD

The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

setting up automated deployments;
upgrading from older installations without network access;
LVM and/or RAID partitioning;
installs on systems with less than about 256MiB of RAM (although note that low-memory systems may not be able to run a full desktop environment reasonably).

In the event that you encounter a bug using the alternate installer, please file a bug on the debian-installer package.

Install OS Linux / Ubuntu Menggunakan USB Flash Disk

Saat sekarang dimana penggunaan flash disk semakin banyak, mungkin lebih mudah kalau instalasi Ubuntu dilakukan via USB flash disk. Keuntungannya, kita nggak perlu harus menyediakan kepingan CD/DVD untuk membakar file .iso hasil download OS Ubuntu, dan selain itu juga proses pembacaan file dari USB flash disk lebih cepat dibandingkan pembacaan file dari CD, sehingga secara otomatis instalasi Ubuntu via flash disk bisa lebih cepat.

Untuk bisa install OS Linux Ubuntu melalui flash disk, tentunya kita tetap memerlukan/download dulu file .iso (CD image). Selanjutnya silahkan gunakan software untuk transfer file .iso ke dalam USB, bisa menggunakan software bawaan Ubuntu bernama Startup Disk Creator (masuk ke System => Administration => Startup Disk Creator).

Selain itu bisa juga menggunakan software sejenisnya seperti misalnya UNetbootin, atau Linux Live USB Creator, atau juga PenDriveLinux, silahkan pilih saja salah satunya. Software-software tersebut bukan hanya untuk Ubuntu, tapi juga untuk distro OS Linux lainnya. Dan biasanya software-software itu menyediakan versi untuk Windows atau Mac OS X, sehingga proses transfer file .iso ke USB bisa dijalankan tidak hanya di Linux, tapi juga di OS Windows/Mac OS.

Tambahan biar Ubuntu lebih lengkap dan OK

Setelah install Ubuntu, sebaiknya langsung lakukan update system:
masuk ke menu System ==> Administration ==> Update Manager / Synaptic Package Manager.
Download dan aktifkan juga driver 3D graphic card anda:
Ubuntu akan secara otomatis mendeteksinya. Atau:
masuk ke menu System ==> Administration ==> Hardware Drivers) biar desktop anda lebih keren.
Dan, biar bisa memainkan file multimedia yang umum digunakan (lagu mp3, video, flash, dll):
install codecs dan plugins, langsung saja klik link ini: apt:ubuntu-restricted-extras.
Selain itu, untuk memudahkan setting dan tweak Ubuntu, boleh juga install salah satu aplikasi ini:
